LA TIMES: Pro BMX biker Dave Mirra, who was one of the most decorated athletes in X Games history, was found dead Thursday of an apparent suicide. He was 41. Officers in Greenville, N.C., found Mirra in a parked truck, killed by what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a statement released by the Greenville Police Department. Mirra was a beloved figure in the world of extreme sports, and his name headlined several BMX video games. Until the 2013 X Games in Munich, he held the record for the most medals in history with 24. Of those, 14 were gold medals. Today is a dark day, a very dark day indeed. I was into pro BMX for a short period of time and the two names everyone knew were Matt Hoffman and Dave Mirra. I never really watched BMX on tv. I might have a few times but never consistently, and not enough to know how many medals he had won or the huge impact he had on it. What I did have was Dave Mirra 2 Freestyle BMX. Such a dope game. It was one of the first games I got for Xbox. My boys and I played it a lot at slumber parties and Fridays after school chillin'. The few times I did watch the X games I always saw Dave Mirra and remembered him for that game. I honestly do not remember anything other then him being in it. Couldn't tell you if he won, or who else was in it. Besides Matt Hoffman. From everything I read about him, he seemed like a good family man who embraced his community. His community had very nice things to say about him, the mayor in particular had some nice words about him publicly. I also read that there was fear among his friends that Mirra was suffering from CTE due to the massive amount of crashes and trauma put on his brain. It makes a lot of sense for a guy who was involved in a sport where crashes happen frequently. Like I said very sad, I hope that everyone who knew of him, even in the slightest would give him a moment in your thoughts. From what it all seems, he was a good guy and he deserves it.
