Kids these days are always looking for new games and excitement. With a myriad of open world, no holds bard video games on the shelf, it becomes hard to find joy in chasing butterflies. Yahoo News:
Associated Press: A 15-year-old boy was killed when he was struck in the head while playing a game of "dodging arrows" at a friend's house, and criminal charges could be possible, authorities said Monday. Caleb Fairchild, an eighth-grader, was playing the bow-and-arrow game Saturday evening when he was hit by an arrow in in Chapmanville, about 45 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said. No parents were around when Caleb and two other kids were playing in a front yard, said State Police Sgt. C.R. Sutphin. The ages of the others involved weren't released but authorities said they were minors. The motivation behind the game wasn't immediately clear. "I've been a policeman for almost 25 years. This is the first time I've ever heard of it," Sutphin said. "They were just goofing around, thought it was a good idea. It's just a bad decision, if you ask me." This is a terrible and sad story. Even beyond that is was totally stupid and 100% avoidable. All obvious takes. My big question is seriously how, what, or where, did these kids get this idea. I just do not understand how anyone over the age of 10, let alone kids who are a few months away from high school could think this is EVER a good idea. It is just mind bottling that this happened. Frankly, it is fucked up. Now just to set a clear picture. These kids were not playing with a bow and arrow just shooting around in the back yard. Shooting at trees or targets. These fucking idiots were shooting arrows at each other and then promptly trying to dodge them. I am sorry but all of those kids involved are beyond fucking dumb. Reiterating here, these kids are basically in high school. They are more in high school then they are in elementary school, middle school, junior high whatever you want to say. These kids are 4 years away from being thrust into the adult world and expected to act/function as a typical citizen. In 4 years these kids could be doing their income tax, living by themselves, or married with kids. It is just so stupid. On every level. If someone says, hey lets play this game then proceed to describe the game as dodge ball with flying knives. No amount of peer pressure should force anyone into doing such a fucking thing. The only way a kid, who is sober, should be forced into doing this is if some bigger stronger kids were forcing him to do. Holding him down as another shot arrows at him. Which in itself is an even more cringe inducing scenario. Blame is going to put in a lot of places. People are going to blame the parents, the school, video games, television, movies, almost anything that sticks. While some of those scapegoats share a small percentage of responsibility (not legal), None of these people or things can absorb the full blame. Because it is not their burden to put upon their shoulders. These kids, are the only ones you can blame. No where have I ever see in movies, tv, video games, a game played by multiple characters that involved dodging arrows. The only close example is the movie Grown Ups with the usual suspects found in Adam Sandler movies. All the main characters were childhood bestfriends, as kids they would play a game, stated in the movie, they would shoot ONE arrow directly into the sky as the group stood around in a circle. The last person to stay in the circle and not run away wins the game. Now in the particular scene, all the characters run from the circle and continue to run as arrow flys upwards in the sky and then succumbs to gravity, falling to the earth. All the characters are running away from the circle where the arrow was shot. They don't stop. The one who wins the game, stays in the circle the entire time, like the fucking idiot Rob Schneider is. In typical Sandler movie fashion, the person who wins the game is to stupidly caught up in celebrating that he forgets to clear the area in which the arrow was fired. First things first, I thought people stopped paying attention to Adam Sandler in 2006. Secondly no one is going to look at this movie and this example and say Hey Fuck you Adam Sandler. Honestly Sandler would be laughing to the bank if he did because all press is good press. He will fur sure tell you that upon his throne of melted cassette tape movie flops. People are going to blame video games. They are going to say that kids these days do not understand the full consequences of physical injuries due to games that allowed to be killed almost an infinite amount of times then respawn as if nothing happened. They also might say that these virtual games have made what used to be entertainment for generations past mundane to the modern children. These realistic open world killing games have turned our children into mindless brainless monsters. Well I am here to call bullshit. So if we recall from earlier in this way too long of blog that these children are in 8th grade or 15 years old. So If we look at these open world "killing" games or war games. EVERY SINGLE ONE. EVERY last shooting, killing, war game is rated M for mature. Video games are categorized by national organizations exactly like movies are. The parameters of what classifies a game as M for mature instead of T for teen, are much different that the classify between PG-13 and R. So the rating distinction of M for mature has age guidelines for who can and can not buy it. Just like going to the movie theatre there are age restrictions as to which movies you can and can not watch. You must be 18 or older to purchase a rated M for mature video game without the presence of a guardian/relative/parent basically anyone older than 18 that looks like they are a responsible adult. I dont know if a 14 year old and 19 year old that are unrelated can buy a M game. I am just going to assume that anyone buying a minor a video game is a relative of some sort. Don't think kids can trick their family into buying, no matter where you buy a M video game for a minor they are required by law to ask if you are aware that of the Rating the game has and that the rating states the game is meant for people 18 and over. I have bought many video game in my day and that is how it went for the early part of my life. There was absolutely no tricking anyone into buying Rated M games for me. Not to mention these kids do not have jobs. They do not have 401k's or steady income, they are dependents and by that it means they are legally depending on a parent or two for income, shelter, and food. So without your money and permission they have no way of getting those games. Even before you get to buying video games, you have to buy a console, which is not some measly payment of $60. Game consoles since the Xbox 360 generation have cost upwards of $300. To an adult that is not a large sum of money, to a child that is almost infinite money. To spare those of you who have stuck with me this far, I am going to try and end this quickly. Kids do not have ways of getting any of this shit by themselves. They need their parents of family to provide it for them. So if you truly believe that violent video games deteriorate developing minds, do not buy them for your children. The they can go over someone else's house to play the same game excuse is bullshit. If you are so concerned about your childs safety, why don't you preemptively concern yourself with their mental and physical safety. When my mother found out I was playing a video game she did not want me playing at a friends house, she did what a parent should do. Call the friends parents and say whatever way you want that you don't like your kid playing violent video games. It's not that hard and even if it is, why should that matter? It is the potential safety of your children we are talking about. I am not trying to tell anyone how to raise their stupid children, nor will I ever. I don't fucking care enough. But when people come out and pass blame onto something that I love, I will not allow it. The videos games are not the problem because the industry of console gaming is not marketed for children. The big money games that Sony and Microsoft designed for their consoles are mainly rated M. The controls are so complex that picking up a game like the ones I describe for the first time is infuriating. No matter what age you are. Even the fucking dialogue is designed and marketed for adults. The list of things/phrases I never understood whilst playing video games was never ending when I was that age. You can not blame the impact anything has had on children when the "thing" in question was NEVER designed for kids. I really want to know what these kids were thinking. More than anything that is what I want to know today and for the week to follow. If anything new is presented I will post an update as a new blog since this one ran rampant. Comments are closed.
