The Legendary Red Wing Gordie Howe took his place among the hockey gods earlier this morning at the age of 88. A true fighter until the end Gordie Howe was the only player in the history of the NHL to play 26 seasons, 25 of which were spent with the Wings in D-town. This man was the greatest hockey player of all time until Wayne Gretzky and sits behind Gretzky on the all time scoring list at number 2, with 801 goals.
The player to coin the term hat trick for something other than 3 goals, was also Gordie Howe. The "Gordie Howe hat trick" involved a goal, an assist and a fight. This great hockey legend won 4 Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, 6 Hart Trophies, 6 Art Ross Trophies, and 23 All-Star Games.... We all marvel at what Jaromir Jagr is doing now, but this man played his final NHL season when he was 51 in 1979-80 and he played in a whopping 80 out of 82 games. The man was everything you look for in a hockey player, and we will never see the likes of a player like him again. R.I.P. Gordie, enjoy skating in heaven with the other hockey gods!
