a blog by La Kifo Mississippi kid, Mississippi State Grad, Versatile playmaker. Every few years or as it seems every year, the college level produces a QB prospect who is more athlete than QB. Tim Tebow, Michael Vick, Tyrod Taylor, Colin Kaepernick, Logan Thomas, Keenan Reynolds, Johnny Manziel, Dak Prescott. All these collegiate athletes had a lot of the same skills and one of them was rushing the football. A big down fall that all these QBs possessed was mediocre throwing talent. Now some were worse than others, Tebow, Thomas. But if you observed their play all of them had average to below average arm talent when compared to the players who graduated or declared for the NFL draft. Dak is not on the lower end of this scale, which is reassuring to this agent. At the same time, he is not the best rusher in that group. Take a downgraded running style of Tebow, and a upgraded version of arm talent from Logan Thomas, that is what Dak Prescott is. Logan Thomas is pretty much a nobody and was pretty much also in college when he attended Virginia State. So not a lot of people know who that fucker is. I think he might still be playing in the NFL, if not his career juice just ran dry. Anyway, to make this comparison user friendly I wont use bum college QBs for examples. Prescott is a listed 6'2 220 lbs. In the median for ideal height, and on the high side for weight (at his height). He is a power running QB, very good at short yardage running, QB draws. He can also move decently in the pocket and escape by stepping up. He does not have good speed, wont be able to run away from full speed linebackers. The way he runs at his weight, he won't be effective using his power running style. At 220 lbs, the lightest competition he would be slamming against would be guys who weigh at least 240, at least. That is a huge problem, since he is a QB, he cannot bulk up 10 - 20 lbs of muscle and fat onto his upper body. That would change almost all of his throwing mechanics, making him even more inaccurate than before. Speaking of his poor accuracy, Dak Prescot really has trouble connecting with receivers on throws of over, 10 yards or more. That is very troubling. 10 yards is the borderline range Prescot has on his accuracy. Within those 10 yards he has some trouble accurately placing the ball, but still makes majority of his underneath throws. When he goes past 10 yards, he loses velocity and any ability to correctly place the ball, (What I mean by that is somewhat complicated, here are some pictures to walk you through that). Dak Prescott can not make that throw. And that throw is not just one throw, that is a basic pro QB throwing concept that the pro starters are routinely expected to make, game in game out. The concept is the idea of reading the defender and throwing the ball where he can not get it.
Prescotts number may look good, but they are deceiving. He will have a hard time completing passes of any variety. The thing is, his running ability makes him a very interesting mid draft pick up. Prescott should have a lot of value in the late 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds. I know Tim Tebow went in the first round, but if you at both their running ability, Prescott has better agility and speed, while Tebow had better strength and vision. In my mind Prescott is more valuable as a project player whom can move around different positions, whereas Tebows only translatable skill was short yardage and goal line rushing, NOT THROWING. So he won't go even close to as early as Tebow but he should have a longer leash in terms of development than Tebow did. His path to getting an opportunity will be a lot like Tyrod Taylor or Brian Hoyer. He will probably get drafted by a team with a stable QB, maybe one later on in his years and develop under him until he is ready to start or the incumbent is ready to retire or leave. A place that would work for him is Dallas, I have linked Dallas to a lot of these young QBs in the draft but that is because they are actively looking for the replacement of Tony Romo. The Cowboys could draft immediate need with their early round picks, like defensive line, tight end, secondary and wait till the late or middle rounds and take Prescott. He is a risk, you never know if his arm will get better, stay the same, or get worse. Either way you have multiple years ahead of you to decide to go back to well of college QBs or stick with the man straight outta the south. If the San Fran Niners got the Kaepernick contract off their books, then Prescott could be a good option for them. But it really looks like the Niners might retain Kaepernick and adding Prescott is adding a slower, younger, just as accurate Kaepernick. They are the same player. Chip Kellys offense relys on quick play action, misdirection, motions and he made Nick Foles look like a top 5 QB in the NFL. What I am saying is having one player like Kaepernick or Prescott could work for Kelly but having the huge contract of Colin is already too much to target another QB of the same variety. It would be really stupid for the Niners to take Prescott, plus the word coming out of LeSean McCoys mouth is Kelly does not like black people. Now Chip Kelly aint no George Bush but it would be a waste of a pick. He could go to San Diego. Phil Rivers is getting old and they really do not look like they have any back up plan in place for when he calls it quits. San Diego would have to do a lot of reworking to their playbook because the way the Chargers run it right now would have Prescott leading the team to an 1-15 finish. They are professionals, so they would know that. It is really a toss up for who will pick him, since he needs a lot of time to develop. Right place, right time Prescott will never be anything more than an average starter. Cam Newton sophomore season numbers, nothing special but can get the job done. Comments are closed.
